Education and labour market

Slovakia suffers from weak connections between education and labour market, which results in high unemployment of graduates and young people. In 2011, as in 2010, more than 120 000 graduates of secondary and tertiary schools finished their education. The problem is not in insufficient job opportunities but on the contrary lack of qualified graduates. Two of three students study humanities (economics, law, social work) instead of technical sciences (programming, electrical engineering), which are better applied in labour market. It's about bad communication between labour market and education.

Employment institute offers proposal to change school funding, which should reduce future unemployment of graduates. Students would focus on fields of study that are attractive to the labour market. The proposal consists of student loans and charging higher education, depending on the proposed options.

Currently, however, the unemployment rate of graduates is more than 35 %. IZ offers several solutions that would greatly help to reduce this rate. The European Commission has allocated EU funds of € 2.3 billion on this issue, which according to our proposals would be used effectively. The aim is to eliminate or reduce current and prevent future youth unemployment.

Eurostat introduced the concept of NEET (Not in education, employment or training), which is an indicator dealing with statistics of young people who do not attend school, do not work or do not participate in any training. This important indicator gives better and more real picture of the graduates in Slovakia and European Union than other indicators. It takes into account the non-active group of young people who are not involved in any kind of education, also don't work, but are willing and able to work or on the other hand do not want to work at all.
